Green Angels
Being a Green Angel is more than simply reducing environmental impacts or raising money for charity. Green Angels are actively involved 7 days a week in improving the world that we live in. Following Eugenie’ Harvey’s philosophy, Green Angel activities do not need to be big – it is the simple actions that make the difference. The Commercial Green Angels have 10 commitments:
- Be Carbon Positive. We will treat what we do as not simply being about reducing the negative impacts on the environment, but also what we can do to make it better. As well as keeping an up to date register of our environmental impacts, we will continue to work out new ways that we can improve the communities that we work in.
- Report Openly. We will measure and report our critical environmental impacts, including our waste to landfill and carbon footprint. We will report publicly through organisations like the Prince of Wales May Day Network and through our new Annual Sustainability Report.
- Reduce Carbon Significantly. As well as being CarbonNeutral since 2006, we set a class leading target to reduce our carbon footprint by 75% by 2010. We will continue to reduce our carbon footprint by a significant amount and continue to be an innovator of low carbon technologies.
- Reduce Waste to Landfill Significantly. We set class leading targets in 2006 to reduce our waste by 75%, which we have already exceeded. We have now a target to be Zero Waste to Landfill by 2012.
- Help Customers Reduce Their Footprint. Through our annual CSR Day, seminars, reviews, consultancy, special projects and other activity, we will help our customers reduce their environmental footprints. We will continue to encourage customers to improve their environmental, ethical and social impacts and engage staff in the journey to a low carbon economy.
- Reduce the Footprint of Our Supply Chain. We will engage with suppliers to reduce the environmental footprint of products and processes. In addition to the supplier assessment programme, our new Good Supplier Scheme will support our suppliers to improve their environmental impacts.
- Help Our Local Communities. We will use a combination of a structured approach through mechanisms, like our Green Ambassadors, and ad hoc activity supporting staff in their own initiatives. We will increase our Green Ambassadors scheme coverage and encourage staff to engage with community programmes in their areas through release days and co-sponsorship.
- Care For Those Less Fortunate. We will use our Charity Charter and other mechanisms to ensure that we support those who are less fortunate than ourselves. We will offer money, skills and time and actively assist our customers, suppliers and other stakeholders to do the same.
- Look After One Another. As well as taking staff development seriously, management will make sure that staff are truly looked after. Being part of the Commercial family is a long term thing, which is why we have such a low staff turnover. We support each other through the good times and the bad.
- Influence the Big Picture. We are leaders in our field and want to influence best practice. To that end, we are open with our new technologies and techniques, whether it be industry specific or more general. We will also connect with strategic bodies to encourage them when they are creating systems that the Commercial values are included.
